Broward County Public Schools - Philosophy
The Broward County Public School District knows that parents have the primary responsibility for teaching character to their children. Therefore the District does not attempt to usurp that role in a child's life. However, the school system feels it must respond today to the community's renewed interest in the development of positive character traits for tomorrow’s leaders.
The School Board of Broward County, Florida, with extensive public input, adopted eight character traits to be infused into regular curriculum and student activities. These character traits are emphasized in special programs each month. For September, the focus is Cooperation; in October, the students’ attention is directed toward Responsibility; November’s theme is Citizenship, followed in December by Kindness. The new year begins with an emphasis on Respect; and February centers around Honesty; in March Self-Control is stressed; and lastly, Tolerance is in the forefront for April.
The view of the District is that one of the best ways to influence a child's behavior is through a positive adult role model. Since that is a key part of the Character Initiative, the staff is committed to modeling these traits. The outcome is an easier way to provide a quality education in a safe, secure learning environment.
In addition to adhering to the philosophy as outlined by the Broward County School District, Coral Springs Schools also embrace the philosophy of the Coral Springs community, and are actively involved throughout the city in maintaining the quality of life enjoyed there. In fact, the Florida Department of Education has awarded many of Coral Springs schools the "Five Star School Award" as schools that have exemplary community involvement.
