About 20 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County lies Coral Springs, Florida. Though the area is marshy, there aren’t any springs in the area. Coral Springs is a planned community which was developed by WCI Communities which was known as Coral Ridge Properties at the time of incorporation in 1963. Today Coral Springs has approximately 130,000 people and is part of the South Florida Metropolitan Area which five and a half million people call home.
Growth came rapidly over the next three decades at an average of about 35,000 for each period, but Coral Springs has been able to maintain its distinctive atmosphere due to stringent codes to protect the aesthetic appeal of the city. In 2006 Coral Springs was ranked as one of the nation’s top cities in which to live by Money Magazine, and as one of the safest cities and best communities for kids in 2007.
Some of the conveniences of the area include nineteen public schools, shopping centers, a regional mall, a museum and theater, and parks which have been added to accommodate the rapid growth rate in the area. The Coral Springs’ Parks and Recreation Department maintains over 50 parks which includes a water park and a skate park. And getting around in Coral Springs is no problem because in-city buses are provided by the city free of the charge.
Downtown Coral Springs is being revitalized to provide a vibrant city center that will attract businesses and create a pedestrian-friendly gathering place. The downtown area is being planned around University Drive and Sample Road.
Interestingly, James Hunt of Coral Ridge Properties wanted to develop an ideal city, so he established strict landscaping and signage laws. The tallest building is a 12-story condominium and only a few office buildings come anywhere close to that height. Even the local McDonald’s doesn’t have the famous arches because of restrictions on commercial signs.
